Forestry

Activities include the following watersheds: Schindler Creek (Clear Lake Oaks), Middle Creek (Upper Lake), Scott's Creek (Lakeport), Kelsey Creek (Kelseyville) and Putah Creek (Middletown).

In each case Greg assisted the RCDs in developing a mailing list and meeting agendas. In all but the Middle Creek CRMP, Greg also facilitated the monthly meetings held during the year (a total of 16 meetings). This past year each of these groups initiated field activities, identified funding sources, and became involved in a number of locally driven planning activities.

Greg has presented seminars to the Resource Management Committee and its bio-resources subcommittee on the current status and trends regarding Sudden Oak Death syndrome and the potential impacts to Lake County (November). Recently he coordinated a one-day forum that assessed the current condition, research, policies and projects affecting oak woodlands. The event has been summarized with the findings edited by the bio- research committee for release in September.

At the request of the Lake County Board of Supervisors Greg served on the ad hoc timber rules committee. He authored the county rule package that ultimately was adopted by the California Board of Forestry. The process took five months of meetings, conference calls, hours of writing/editing and three trips to Sacramento to present the package to the Board of Forestry. The rule package was incorporated into the State rulebook in January 2001.

Also at the request of the Lake County Board of Supervisors Greg serves on the ad hoc fire safe committee. He helped identify potential funding sources and assisted in grant proposal development to implement a fire safe coordinator position through the RCDs. Greg also served as a technical editor for a newly published Landowner's Guide to Watershed Management pamphlet developed by the RCDs.
